Half Moon Bay, California, is a coastal gem — a place where breathtaking ocean views, fresh sea air, and small-town charm blend seamlessly with outdoor adventures and laid-back vibes. Whether you're seeking relaxation, nature, or a touch of adventure, this charming seaside town offers plenty to experience, even in just a couple of days.

On my way to San Diego, California, I decided to break up my journey from Bend, Oregon, with a stop in Half Moon Bay—the perfect halfway point. March weather in this area tends to be mildly chilly, ranging from 59°F (15°C) during the day to 49°F (10°C) at night, often accompanied by a refreshing coastal breeze. I lucked out with plenty of sun, though the wind kept things brisk. With pants, a sweatshirt, and a light windbreaker, morning and mid-day beach strolls were just right.

Where to Stay: A Cozy Harbor Retreat

Upon arrival, we decided on Harbor Village RV Park, a newer spot right in Pillar Point Harbor. Ideally, I would have stayed at the state park, but since it was fully booked, this turned out to be a fantastic alternative. The RV park had immaculately clean restrooms and showers with plenty of hot water—a big win in my book. Plus, its prime location made it easy to walk to restaurants, the beach, and a few cute local shops.

First Evening: Coastal Sips & Sunset Views

After settling in, I took a one-minute stroll from my site to Los Costanera, a waterfront Peruvian restaurant with an inviting ambiance. By 6 PM, the place was buzzing with a waitlist for tables, but I snagged a cozy seat at the bar on the second floor. The drinks were fantastic, and the service was just as good. A perfect way to unwind after a long drive.

Morning Rituals & Ocean Breezes

The Press Cafe

The next morning, I kicked off the day with a chai latte from The Press, a quaint coffee shop right across the street. With my husband and our adventurous pup, Finn, in tow, we wandered down to the beach. There’s something magical about the crisp morning air, the sound of crashing waves, and the pure joy of a dog running freely along the shore.

Exploring Local Gems

Half Moon Bay Lavender

After a leisurely start, we hopped in the van for a quick five-minute drive to Half Moon Bay Lavender. I couldn't resist picking up a tiny air plant and a beautifully scented candle—a small touch to make the Wandering Van feel a bit more like home.

Next up was Mavericks Beach, world-famous for its massive waves and fearless surfers. Today, however, the ocean was calm—no surfers in sight. Still, it was a peaceful place to take in the rugged beauty of the coastline. On a gorgeous day like today in Half Moon Bay, a bike ride is a must! And if guided bike tours are your thing, you’re in for a treat—plenty of scenic routes and coastal views await!

Boutique Finds & A Seafood Feast

Before lunch, I made a quick detour to Nasturtium: Art of Living, a charming little boutique with carefully curated home decor and artisan gifts. Then it was off to Barbara’s Fish Trap, a local institution known for its fresh seafood and casual, no-frills charm. Luckily, we arrived just in time for a short ten-minute wait before diving into steaming hot clam chowder served in a sourdough bread bowl—absolute perfection.

Next Stop: Morro Bay!

After two days of relaxing beach walks, delicious food, and coastal wandering, it was time to hit the road again.
